The governing Council of the College meets three to four times a year to discuss regulatory policy and debate issues that influence the quality of oral health care in Ontario.The Council is composed of:

• 12 dentists elected by dentists registered to practise in Ontario
• nine to 11 members of the public nominated by the provincial government
• two dentists appointed by each of the university dental faculties in Ontario – the University of Toronto and the University of Western Ontario
The public members are not dentists. Their responsibility is to speak for the public. They play a vital part in the College’s work at the Council and on committees. The full involvement of public members is central to the College’s desire for inclusiveness and accountability.The governing Council is chaired by the President who is elected from within the Council. The Registrar is the chief executive officer of the College who is appointed by Council and has specific duties outlined by provincial law.Supporting the work of the Council are seven statutory committees. The membership of these committees is comprised of a mix of both dentists and public members. These committees are required under the Regulated Health Professions Act, and include:

Registration Committee
Complaints Committee
Discipline Committee
Fitness to Practise Committee
Quality Assurance Committee
Patient Relations Committee

There are also non-Council members appointed by the Executive Committee to serve on designated Committees. These members chosen, as per current By-law No. 5, through a blind selection process.
