Bill 168 - Tools and Resources
Tools and resources available to help you understand new legislation on workplace violence and workplace harassment

Bill 168 amendments to Ontario's Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) came into effect on June 15, 2010. Any employer with more than five employees must adhere to and implement the provisions set out in the new legislation. Bill 168 is available for review on the Ontario Ministry of Labour website at www.labour.gov.on. The site also contains information and resources to help employers transition to and comply with the new provisions. This material includes a template for developing a workplace violence and harassment policy and tools to assess your workplace environment for possible safety risks.

The Ministry has developed a publication entitled Workplace Violence and Harassment: Understanding the Law, which explains what every employee and employer should know about the workplace violence and workplace harassment requirements set out in the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA). It assists employers in complying with the new regulation by helping them:

  • Develop workplace violence and harassment policies and programs, with examples of suitable policies;
  • Assess risks of workplace violence including situations involving handling of cash, dealing with potentially violent clients, working alone, working in high-crime areas, protecting valuable goods and transporting people or goods;
  • Identify possible ways to control those risks.

The Ontario Health and Safety Council of Ontario has also produced a detailed guide entitled Developing Workplace Violence and Harassment Policies and Programs: A Toolbox, which includes a review chart to help you determine whether your workplace policies and programs comply with the requirements set out in the OHSA and tools to help assess your workplace environment for possible safety risks. In addition, the guide also includes a template workplace violence and workplace harassment policy. It is also available on the Ministry of Labour website at www.labour.gov.on.
