Continuing Education and e-Portfolio

Continuing education (CE) is essential for all members to maintain the highest standards of professional care and it is a key element of the College’s new Quality Assurance (QA) Program.

All members with a general or specialty certificate of registration are required to participate in the College’s Quality Assurance Program and pursue CE activities as part of their commitment to the profession and lifelong learning. This includes obtaining at least 90 CE points in each three-year cycle.

There are three categories in which you may obtain CE points: Category 1, Core Courses, 15 CE points minimum per cycle; Category 2, Approved Sponsor Courses, 45 CE points minimum per cycle; Category 3, Other Courses, any remaining number of CE points may be obtained from other courses, including those offered by non-approved sponsors.

Category 1: Core Courses

15 CE points minimum per cycle

At least 15 CE points must be obtained from successfully participating in core courses approved by the Quality Assurance Committee. Core courses must be relevant to the practice of the profession and designed to promote members’ continuing competence and maintenance of professional standards. In approving courses for this category, the Quality Assurance Committee considers such factors as:

  • content is broadly relevant to the practice of the profession by all members;
  • content is applicable to the practice of the profession in Ontario;
  • course is presented in association with an Approved Sponsor;
  • course providers are recognized experts on the subject;
  • quality of the presentation and the delivery mode;
  • includes references and/or links to supportive educational materials;
  • absence of any commercial bias;
  • includes an independent assessment component;
  • accessible by all members of the College.

Core courses are offered through numerous Approved Sponsors and a complete List of Approved Core Courses is maintained on the College’s website.

Please note that you may claim CE points for a specific core course in Category 1 only once. If you repeat the same course in a subsequent three-year cycle, you may claim CE points for it in Category 2, but not again in Category 1.

To assist approved sponsors and speakers, the Quality Assurance Committee has approved General Principles for the presentation of core courses, so that members will receive appropriate credit for their participation.

Category 2: Approved Sponsor Courses

45 CE points minimum per cycle

At least 45 CE points must be obtained from successfully participating in courses on a clinical dental topic offered by approved sponsors or by teaching.

For more information about claiming CE points, please see the Explanation of Credit Points for Categories 2 and 3.

Category 3: Other Courses

Any remaining number of CE points may be obtained from other courses, including those offered by non-approved sponsors.

Please note that attendance at dental conventions qualifies for CE points in Category 3. If you attend a course/lecture/seminar on a clinical dental topic while attending at a dental convention offered by an approved sponsor, you may claim this portion of your CE points in Category 2 and the balance in Category 3. Supporting documentation should be obtained from the approved sponsor regarding your attendance and activities for the event.

For more information about claiming CE points, please see the Explanation of Credit Points for Categories 2 and 3.

Approved Sponsors and Study Clubs

The list of categories of approved sponsors for continuing education programs remain the same.

The College reviews applications from study groups formed by members of the College wishing to be recognized as an Approved Study Club and therefore able to assign CE points to the various programs and meetings that it sponsors.

e-Portfolio

The e-Portfolio is an online program that allows you to securely record your CE activities and keep track of your CE points by category. Your e-Portfolio also provides a running total of your progress, so you will know how many CE points you have claimed in each category and how many more you need to reach the required 90 CE points for the 3-year cycle.

To access your e-Portfolio, log into your Member Resource Centre account and click on Your e-Portfolio from the navigation menu. The first time you access your e-Portfolio, you will be taken through a short on-screen tutorial that explains how the program works. You will then be able to enter your CE activities by simply clicking the “Log a New Activity” button. Have your course certificates and other proof of attendance documents at hand and refer to them as you fill in the required information fields, such as course title, sponsor name and CE points.

Remember that you must keep your original CE documents to provide evidence of your successful participation in the CE activities you have claimed. These documents must be retained for five years from the end of each three-year CE cycle and submitted to the College on request.

The College randomly selects members each month to have their e-Portfolio reviewed and ensure they are meeting their obligations under the Quality Assurance Regulation. Selected members are notified in writing and given 30 days to submit their CE documents to the College.
