Practice Enhancement
Tool (PET)

The Practice Enhancement Tool is a computer-based self-assessment program, also known as PET, that allows members to evaluate and assess their practice, knowledge, skill and judgement based on peer-derived standards.

The Regulated Health Professions Act requires the College to have a QA Program that includes self, peer and practice assessment. The Practice Enhancement Tool provides an innovative and effective way of fulfilling this legislative responsibility.

The College has been working closely with the National Dental Examining Board and the Wilson Centre at the University of Toronto in the development of this tool to ensure its validity, integrity and reliability.

The PET was launched in January 2013, and each month a certain percentage of members with a general or specialty certificate of registration will be selected at random to complete this self-assessment. Members who are selected will be notified in writing and provided with the necessary instructions to access the PET. All members will be required to complete a self-assessment once every five years.

The online program is easily accessible. This self-assessment consists of 200 multiple choice and case study questions that are based on foundational knowledge in certain competency areas. Currently, these include:

  • pharmacology
  • oral medicine and pathology
  • radiology
  • caries
  • endodontics
  • periodontics
  • orthodontics
  • prosthodontics
  • oral surgery
  • infection prevention and control
  • jurisprudence and ethics
  • operative and preventive
  • pediatric dentistry
  • medical emergencies
  • general medicine

Once members complete the self-assessment, their results will appear on the screen immediately. We expect that the overwhelming majority of members will continue to receive a message that they are competent in all areas of practice covered by their self-assessment. Some members will be notified that, relative to their peers, their results indicate that they may benefit from continuing education activities in one or more areas of practice. That’s where the Practice Enhancement Consultant comes in.
