Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario Elects New President and Council
TORONTO – The Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario (RCDSO), the regulatory body for the over 7,200 dentists in Ontario, has elected its President and Council for the 2001/2003 term.
The RCDSO Council at its meeting on January 18 elected the following:
- Dr. Eric Luks, President
- Dr. Robert Brandon, Vice-President
Dr. Luks of Toronto and Port Carling has served as an elected councillor at the College for over 13 years. Well-known for his commitment to the dental community for the past 30 years, he has served as dental educator, president of many dental groups including the Ontario Society of Orthodontists, and in a leadership capacity in numerous dental study groups. Two of his children are dentists.
Dr. Brandon is from London, and in his fourth and final term with the College. He is returning for his second term as Vice-President. He has served as a volunteer provincially and nationally for the profession for 28 years. Over the years he has received such honours as the Canadian Governor-General’s award of merit for volunteers, the Ontario Dental Association’s service award, the Alumni of Distinction Award for 2000 from the University of Western Ontario’s Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, and the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario honour of recognition.
"I take very seriously the motto of the College, protecting the public and guiding the profession," said Dr. Luks. "One of the best ways to protect the public interest is to help Ontario dentists provide safe, effective and ethical dental care to the people of Ontario. I look forward to working with dentists around the province to successfully meet the challenges ahead."
The RCDSO’s 24-member Council is composed of elected dentists from 12 electoral districts in the province, one dentist appointed by each of the two dental schools in the province, and from nine to 11 public members appointed by the Lieutenant Governor in Council.
The Council members are: Dr. Douglas Smith, Dr. Larry Parker, Dr. Richard Filion, Dr. Randy Lang, Dr. Eric Luks, Dr. Robert Brandon, Dr. Cameron Witmer, Dr. Ronald Yarascavitch, Dr. Virginia Luks, Dr. Bohdan Kryshtalskyj, Dr. Louis London and Dr. Thomas McKean.
The academic appointments to Council are Dr. Phillip Watson, University of Toronto and Dr. David Charles, University of Western Ontario.
The public appointees to the Council are Lynne Arnill, Victor Braney, Douglas McVeigh, Robert Metras, John Pappain, Lloyd Pollack, Krystyna Rudko, Elesh Ruparel, Joan Stewart and Ben Wiwcharyk.
RCDSO was established in 1868 under the first dental act to be adopted in the world. Its mission is to protect the public’s right to quality dental services by providing leadership to the dental profession in self-regulation.
