The purpose of self-regulation by health care professions is to protect the public interest. This is the fundamental principle on which everything that the College does is built.

It was certainly one of the driving forces behind the creation of the College’s malpractice insurance program in the 1970s. Called the Professional Liability Program (PLP), it provides errors and omissions coverage for all Ontario dentists.

The cost of PLP coverage is included in the annual licensure fee so all dentists are automatically covered. This means that no patient need ever worry and can have total confidence that the dentist caring for them and their family is covered by malpractice insurance.

This coverage is also extended to former, retired and deceased members of the College, as well as to dental partnerships and health professional corporations that hold a valid certificate of authorization from the College.
