Minimal Sedation Authorization

As of September 15, 2020 all dentists who administer minimal sedation are required to be authorized by the College.

What is minimal sedation?

  • Nitrous oxide oxygen ONLY
    • Can be used for both adult and pediatric patients.
  • Oral sedation at MINIMAL dose
    • Can be used on adult patients.
    • Must have training, authorization and permit for Oral Moderate Conscious Sedation to treat pediatric patients.

Dentists with only minimal sedation authorization are not authorized to use nitrous oxide oxygen and oral sedation at a minimal dose combined. To combine, they must have training, authorization and a facility permit for Oral Moderate Conscious Sedation to treat adult and pediatric patients.

Application Guide

What will I need before I start my application?

  • Access to a desktop or laptop computer with internet connection. Mobile devices (smartphones, tablets) are not recommended. Use of Google Chrome is not recommended
  • Your RCDSO Member Resource Centre (MRC) password
  • Credit Card Payment information (Visa, Mastercard, American Express)

How do I complete my application ?

  1. Log in to your RCDSO Portal
  2. Click the dropdown menu in the top right-hand corner, then click “Minimal Sedation”
  3. Click "Minimal Sedation Application” in the left-hand menu, then click “Create Application” to proceed
  4. Complete the application and submit your application fee

Receipt and Member Authorization Certificate 

  • Your receipt and authorization certificate will be available for download through the Member Resource Centre 24 to 48 hours after approval of your application and fee.
  • Receipt – Navigate to the “My Receipts” section of your MRC.
  • Certificate – Navigate to the “Minimal Sedation” section of your MRC. In the table, click on your authorization, then click “Minimal Sedation Certificate”.

FAQs

How long is my authorization valid?

Your authorization expires March 31st  following the date of your application, regardless of the date of issuance. To be maintained, it will have to be renewed annually.

What do I do if my application is denied?

If there was an error in your submission, email sedation@rcdso.org.

Otherwise, you may re-apply for authorization once you meet the requirements.

How much does it cost to apply?

The application fee is $150. You are required to renew your authorization annually by March 31. The annual renewal fee is $150. Fees are not pro-rated under any circumstances.

When will I receive my receipt and certificate?

  1. Your receipt and authorization certificate will be available for download through the Member Resource Centre 24 to 48 hours after approval of your application and fee.

Does my office need a permit for minimal sedation?

No.

I’m already authorized to do sedation at a higher modality, do I need to apply for minimal?

No, your current authorization includes the administration of minimal.

You can check if you’ve already applied for/received minimal authorization by checking the "Minimal Sedation" section of the RCDSO Portal.
