International Applicants

What is an international applicant?

Before you can apply for a license to practice dentistry in Ontario, you must successful pass the national examinations administered by the National Dental Examining Board of Canada (NDEB).

There are two types of international applicants.

  1. International applicant: accredited education/training

Canada, the United States, Australia, New Zealand and Ireland have a mutually recognized system of accreditation of dental training.

If your dental education/training occurred in the United States, Australia, New Zealand or Ireland, you are an international applicant but can apply directly to take the national dentistry exams administered by the NDEB.

For dental education programs from the following countries, applicants must have graduated on or after the following dates:

    Australia

    March 31, 2010

    New Zealand

    December 14, 2011

    Ireland

    December 5, 2012

  1. International applicant: non-accredited education/training

If your dental education/training occurred in any other country from those listed above (#1), you are considered internationally-trained and your education is considered non-accredited. There are two pathways to become eligible to take the NDEB national dental examinations.
