Sedation Renewal 2020-2021: Frequently Asked Questions

To renew your current sedation/anesthesia authorization, review the table below for the highest level of sedation or anesthesia you have been authorized to provide.

You will need to attest to the following items below that that matches the level of sedation you provide and the patient population.

  1. Current Basic and or Advanced Life Support
  2. To have completed the minimum number of cases required
  3. To confirm that you will have obtained the required CE by December 14, 2021

Basic Life Support (BLS) Training*

  • CPR at the Level of Health Care Practitioner or its equivalent with training that includes a hands on component.

Advance Life Support Training*

Adult Patients

  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) with training that includes a hands on component

Paedatric Patients

  • Paediatric Advanced Life Support (ACLS) with training that includes a hands on component OR
  • Paediatric Emergency Assessment Recognition (PEARS) with training that includes a hands on component

Continuing Education*

For the purposes of fulfilling this requirement, courses in the management of medical emergencies are accepted. Courses to acquire or maintain life-support certification (BLS, ACLS, PALS and PEARS) are NOT accepted.

Minimum Number of Cases Required

For the purposes of fulfilling this requirement, the calendar year during which the minimum number of cases is completed is the year of your authorization approval i.e March 31, XX – March 31, XX.

Facility Permits

How do I renew my facility permit? How can I confirm that you have received my renewal? A new dentist is joining our office to provide sedation. Should we add them to the renewal? How can we add them to our permit? We are not doing sedation now but we will later or we don’t do a lot of sedation at the office or we’re not sure that we will continue to offer sedation at the office. Should we renew our permit? We have not done any sedation at the office in the past 12 months. How do I complete the renewal? I have multiple sedation renewals. Can I pay for everything at once? I just received my permit, do I have to renew? Is there a reduced fee? When will I receive my new permit for 2020-2021? When will my renewal be processed? I want to cancel my permit. What do I do? I requested to cancel my permit but I changed my mind. What do I do?

Member Authorization

How do I renew my member authorization? How can I confirm that you have received my renewal? How do I cancel my authorization? I requested to cancel my authorization but I changed my mind. What do I do? When will I receive my new authorization for 2020-2021 I do not meet the minimum number of required cases, how do I renew? I recently received my annual authorization. Do I have to renew? Is there a reduced fee? What are the CPR requirements? Where do I submit my CPR? I have not administered sedation in the past 12 months but will later on this year or I don’t administer sedation often or I am not sure that I will continue to administer sedation. Should I renew my authorization? In the future, I only intend to administer minimal sedation, but right now I am authorized to administer oral moderate sedation / parenteral conscious sedation / deep sedation and/or general anesthesia. How can I downgrade my authorization to minimal sedation only? What do the codes “OM”, “P” and “DG” mean? The Standard of Practice says I have to complete a number of sedation cases, and a number of continuing education hours in order to remain in compliance. Where can I submit my cases and log my continuing education information? I have not administered sedation in the past 12 months. What should I do? I have not completed the required sedation-related continuing education. What should I do? I only do nitrous/minimal, do I have to renew? How do I register for minimal sedation?
