Regulation change - Healing Arts and Radiation Protection Act (HARPA)

The Ministry of Health (MOH) has made a regulatory amendment to the Healing Arts and Radiation Protection Act (HARPA) to modernize the shielding methodology for x-ray installations.

Dentists applying for an x-ray installation permit should be aware that they have the option of using the existing shielding methodology contained in Appendix 2 of Safety Code 20A or the newly added shielding methodology contained in NCRP Report #147.

The regulation change will apply to x-ray and CT installation plans. The regulatory change on shielding design methods came into effect on July 1, 2022.

Dentists applying for an x-ray installation permit should discuss these options with their radiology equipment supplier to determine the most appropriate shielding method for their office.
