Process to install or replace a dental CT scanner

Planning to install and operate a dental CT scanner? Here’s what you need to know.

  • Your office must have written approval from X-ray Inspection Services (XRIS).  Their email address is XRIS@ontario.ca.
  • All CT equipment has a maximum life expectancy, after which time the machine must be decommissioned and replaced.
  • To replace a CT scanner that has exceeded the manufacturer’s life expectancy, you must submit a request to XRIS and receive their approval before installing and operating a new machine.

New XRIS application process

XRIS anticipates an increase in CT installation requests due to aging dental CT scanners. Starting August 15, 2023, dental facilities with a current facility permit for a CT scanner that are replacing an aging machine must submit an application (i.e. Form 1 - X-ray Equipment Registration, Form 2 - Application for Approval of X-ray Installation and Form 3 - X-ray Equipment and Shielding Specifications) to XRIS for approval to install a replacement CT machine.

XRIS will issue an acknowledgement letter signed by the Director of X-Ray Safety, indicating the original CT designation remains valid, and the replacement CT scanner can be installed and operated.

This change does not affect the College’s facility permit requirements or the process for an already permitted facility that wishes to install additional CT scanners.  In both of these scenarios, the office will need to obtain a new CT letter of designation from XRIS.

If you have any questions about obtaining approval for the installation of a new CT scanner contact ctscanners@rcdso.org or visit the CT Scanners section on our website.
