Important: Measles preparedness memo and FAQs from CMOH
As part of Ontario’s ongoing response to the current measles outbreak, the College is sharing important information from the Chief Medical Officer of Health (CMOH) and the Ministry of Health to support your clinical practice and infection prevention efforts.
Please take a few moments to review the following documents:
CMOH Memo – Measles Outbreak Preparedness and Response
- Outlines current outbreak status, immunization strategies, and recommendations for health care providers across Ontario.
FAQs – Measles Management for Health Care Providers
- Provides practical guidance on identifying, managing, and reporting suspected measles cases, as well as protecting staff and patients.
Key points
- Updated immunization recommendations for patients and staff
- Infection prevention and control (IPAC) measures for suspect cases
- Reporting protocols
- Special considerations for vulnerable populations.
According to the College’s IPAC Standard, dental offices must maintain a written policy for managing patients with suspected febrile respiratory, rash, and eye infections—a classification that includes measles. Dentists should consider measles, particularly for patients exhibiting respiratory symptoms, those with known exposure to a measles case, or individuals residing in or having recently traveled to areas where measles is circulating, both within and outside Canada.
The Chief Medical Officer of Health stressed in their FAQs that health care professionals must maintain documentation of all staff’s immunization status to measles on file to avoid staff exclusion in the event of a measles exposure.
We encourage you to review these materials and ensure your teams are informed and prepared.
