Canada Dental Benefit becomes law
The Canada Dental Benefit (CDB) became law last night. This is the first stage of the government’s plan to deliver dental coverage for families without insurance and with income under $90,000, and will allow eligible children under 12 to get the dental care they need while a comprehensive national dental care program is developed.
Eligible parents or guardians will be able to access direct, up-front tax-free payments to cover dental expenses for their children under 12-years-old. It is an income-tested program. The Canada Dental Benefit would provide payments up to $650 per child. It is expected to help 500,000 children across the country. The program will launch December 1, 2022, but expenses can be claimed for dental services after October 1, 2022.
Expanded access through the CDB will result in dentists treating and interacting with more patients. The College looks forward to working with federal and provincial partners—as well as stakeholders--on the impact of this broader access to oral health care.
