UofT and Western library services for dentists working on the PET
Dentists preparing for or in the process of completing the Practice Enhancement Tool (PET) often contact the College for advice on resources.
The PET resources offered by the College offer many potential sources of information. These resources are suggestions only.
Textbooks are an excellent resource, not only for those who are working toward completion of the PET, but also for those who wish to research clinical questions or acquire up-to-date knowledge. Although you may decide to purchase such resources, use libraries to borrow texts for use at home or to spend time reviewing them on site.
The dentistry library at the University of Toronto has recently introduced two new free services that are currently available exclusively to members who are working on their assessment and have the opportunity to visit the library.
WiFi Services
Dentists who are able to bring their own personal laptop computer to the library may now register for WiFi service. With an internet connection, dentist may now log in to their PET, access the questions, and use the textbooks or other resources for additional reference. Once registered for WiFi, a password will be provided and remains effective for five days.
Computer Terminals
Dentists can use a public terminal to complete the PET. For both services mentioned, you will be asked to complete an application form. One is titled “WiFi Request Form” and the other is “Reserve a Computer Terminal”. These forms may be completed in advance, online, or may be filled out at the library upon arrival. More
There are several textbook suggestions listed in the College's PET resources. Until recently, most of these texts have been on course reserve, meaning that they were only available on loan for a very short period; overnight on weekdays or for the weekend only. The dentistry library has recently acquired additional copies of some of these texts, making it easier to borrow directly from them with the purchase of an external researcher card or through an interlibrary loan service.
Texts are loaned for one week and can be renewed up to three times. Depending on availability, dentists may also access a computer terminal when visiting The Allyn and Betty Taylor Library at Western University. Upon arrival, a guest login may be requested and a temporary username and password will be provided, which remains valid for the remainder of the day. Additional information may be found on their website.
