As a result of a complaint, the Inquiries, Complaints and Reports Committee decided to caution Dr. David Robert D'Aloisio as follows: • Your informed consent protocols in this matter did not meet the expected standard of the profession. You have a professional and ethical responsibility to ensure that you have comprehensive informed consent discussions with patients in advance of providing treatment. These discussions should include information about your diagnosis, the nature and purpose of the proposed treatment, along with treatment alternatives, and the benefits, risks and limitations of treatment. • You have been cautioned before by the ICR with respect to your informed consent protocols. It is expected that you learn from this experience; the course in Informed Consent that you have been ordered to take; and that you implement the lessons into your practice such that you will not be the subject of similar complaints in the future. • Your communication with patients and other practitioners should always reflect the high standards of the dental profession in Ontario. It is incumbent upon you as a dentist in Ontario to ensure that you handle patient concerns with sensitivity and compassion, and that you do not escalate situations unnecessarily. Your personal relationships with other practitioners should not cloud your professional judgment, and you should always set aside any personal differences to work with other practitioners for the best interests of the patient.
