Caution
-
As a result of its investigation of a formal complaint, the Inquiries, Complaints and Reports Committee decided to caution Dr. Cope as follows: • Dentures should be fabricated from final impressions. When Dr. Cope could not successfully obtain a final impression for her patient’s lower partial denture, she should have sought patient consent to fabricate the denture using an impression that was not final with the understanding that it might require adjustments or replacement. Alternatively, Dr. Cope could have provided the patient the option to have the denture redone at that point, or referred her to a specialist. • Dentists have a legal and ethical obligation to obtain informed consent prior to commencing treatment, including estimated fees. As a part of the informed consent process, Dr. Cope should advise her patients if she intends to charge above the fees listed in the ODA Fee Guide. • Dr. Cope is responsible for communicating with her patients in a professional manner. Nothing in the patient’s chart indicates that the patient was prone to easy bruising, and Dr. Cope should not have communicated this to her patient, as it implied the bruising was caused by her personal condition, rather than the force used to remove the impression. The hallmark of a professional dentist is the ability to develop relationships with patients, their agents and other healthcare providers marked by professional courtesy, effective communication skills, and a caring and professional attitude. Care and effort must be taken to demonstrate respect and consideration in professional interactions, even in stressful circumstances. • Dr. Cope should ensure her correspondence to the College is accurate and reflective of what is documented in the patient record.
