Caution
-
As a result of a complaint, the Inquiries, Complaints and Reports Committee decided to caution Dr. Kenneth Crossman as follows: • Dr. Crossman must have adequate training, knowledge, and understanding in an area of clinical care before providing treatment in that area to patients. In the absence of adequate training, knowledge and understanding, a dentist can cause permanent damage to a patient’s dentition, including overreduction of teeth during orthodontic treatment, which may lead to future, ongoing clinical needs for those patients and serious potential consequences including loss of natural teeth. •Dr. Crossman must communicate directly and immediately with patients regarding clinical outcomes that are less than ideal or poor. If a patient is dissatisfied by the outcome of treatment, whether because they were informed or because they have experienced post-operative symptoms or have aesthetic concerns, Dr. Crossman should speak to the patient at that time. It is not appropriate to avoid discussing these issues or to defer such discussions until another date. In this instance, Dr. Crossman’s failure to speak to the patient when she noticed that he had overreduced her teeth during orthodontic treatment contributed to her decision to seek treatment elsewhere. • The consequences of providing treatment beyond one’s training, knowledge and understanding and of failing to communicate in a forthright manner with patients about clinical outcomes also includes diminished confidence in the profession of dentistry. Dr. Crossman should be mindful that his actions reflect on the profession as a whole, because diminished confidence in the profession by members of the public may lead people to avoid treatment, thereby contributing further dental issues, and/or to seek multiple opinions, thereby increasing cost and time for patients.

As a result of a complaint, the Inquiries, Complaints and Reports Committee decided to caution Dr. Kenneth A. Crossman as follows: • As a dentist and a member of the profession, you have a professional and ethical responsibility to charge fees that reflect the treatment rendered. In this case, when you charged for an extraction of an impacted tooth rather than an erupted tooth with respect to the patient’s tooth 27, you billed inappropriately and overcharged the patient. You must use the proper billing codes that accurately describe the treatment performed to ensure that your billing practices are appropriate.
