Complaints & Reports Outcomes

Case File: 150511

Decision Date:
May 07, 2017

Caution

As a result of its investigation of a formal complaint, the Inquiries, Complaints and Reports Committee decided to caution Dr. Abou-Kheir as follows:

• Dentists have an obligation to consider and discuss with the patient the risks and benefits of any treatment plan. This includes critically examining treatment recommended by a specialist. When a dentist does not inquire about what appears to be a questionable treatment plan devised by a specialist or another practitioner, the patient may be at risk of harm, particularly for irreversible treatment such as extractions.

• Dr. Abou-Kheir should review the College’s Guideline on “The Role of Opioids in the Management of Acute and Chronic Pain in Dental Practice” and should consider non-opioid options and limit the number of tablets dispensed for any opioid prescription.
