As a result of a complaint, the Inquiries, Complaints and Reports Committee decided to caution Dr. Charles Botbol as follows: • You did not appropriately evaluate and communicate the likelihood of implant success. The Canaray report showed the implant sites had a high risk of failure so it was inadvisable for you to proceed with the “All on 4” treatment. • You did not thoroughly discuss and document treatment options and risks, including the specific risks to the patient, before proceeding with treatment. Remember that informed consent is a process of communication and not a signed form in the absence of meaningful dialogue. • You should always tell patients that immediate implant placement is likely to be less successful than waiting for the surgical site to heal, particularly if you are grafting bone. This discussion must be documented and the patient should be given the option of waiting for implant placement and loading. • You should consider referral to a specialist when a case is challenging and offer this option to the patient.
