Caution
-
As a result of its investigation of a formal complaint, the Inquiries, Complaints and Reports Committee decided to caution Dr. Mauro Anthony Fattore as follows: • Dr. Fattore should consider patient-specific risks associated with complicated surgical extractions, including the positioning of the tooth to be extracted relative to other anatomical structures such as the mandibular nerve. The nature of these risks should be disclosed in his informed consent discussions with each patient. • When post-operative complications, including paraesthesia, occur following surgical extractions, Dr. Fattore should maximize the chance that follow-up treatment, if necessary, will be successful by ensuring that he refers patients to specialists for consultations in a timely manner. • When post-operative complications occur, Dr. Fattore should communicate the nature of the complications to the patient in a clear, forthright manner. He should ensure that the patient understands the planned approach for managing the complications and has an opportunity to ask, and receive answers for, any questions he or she has in the circumstances.
